Repeat Prescription Policy

  Back

One of the most contentious issues that we have to deal with is “why does my pet need to be seen by a vet before he can have any more medicine?” We often sympathise with this view when dealing with patients that have been stable on medication for a long time but unfortunately we have very little discretion in this matter. Veterinary Surgeons have been given a privilege (we do not have a right) that allows us to dispense medicines to patients that are under our care. The definition of what constitutes an animal that is under our care is one that has been examined within three months. If we prescribe to an animal that we haven’t seen within the previous 3 months we are breaking the dispensing code and liable to prosecution. We thank you for your understanding on this matter.
